Most car rental companies in Costa Rica offer cars with manual transmissions. They can also arrange cars with automatic transmissions, but in limited availability. Be sure to inform us in advance if you need an automatic car, so we can reserve it ahead of time.

Depending on the destination you plan to visit, we recommend a 4×4 car, not only because it has better traction on rough roads, but also because it has greater visibility and stability.
Within the central valley region, there is no need to reserve a car with four-wheel drive. However for all the other areas of the country it is highly recommended. There are also destinations like Tortuguero National Park and Corcovado National Park where it is not possible to drive, and you must leave the car at the port of your departure.
