Pristine white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and plentiful palm trees have made the tiny town of Samara an internationally sought-after destination. The village is a cluster of hotels and restaurants that can be traversed on foot in its entirety in well under a half an hour. But it is the beach that consistently awes travelers: the immaculate sand leads from palm shade to gentle waves, which are softened by the large coral reef offshore. Because of the reef, Samara Beach is considered one of the safest swimming spots in Costa Rica; this makes it popular for families with children. The beach is 21 miles (35 km) from administrative center Nicoya, a hub for transportation to the many beaches and national parks in the area. Fortunately, Samara is one of the most accessible.
Due to Samara’s popularity and restricted size, accommodations here tend towards the expensive. Economy options that maintain some charm as well as comfort, cleanliness, and convenience are difficult to find in the desirable locales of Costa Rica, but the Samara Beach Hotel somehow manages to be the exception. The 20-room, mission style building on pretty, well-landscaped grounds is a refreshing version of an economy hotel. Just a short walk from the beach, the hotel has a lovely pool nestled in a luxuriously green garden, complete with deck loungers from which to take in the attractive scene. To the side of the pool is a rustic yet romantic covered terrace, like a gigantic gazebo with flowing drapes: this is where weddings and events are held at the Samara Beach Hotel, which happens to be a popular wedding venue in a town that prides itself on its destination nuptials.
Whether getting married in a sandy ceremony or simply seeking low-stress adventure, any visit to Samara should include more than the obvious beach lounging. Visitors can take advantage of the mild waves and try their hand at surfing for the first time or join adventure tours for ziplining, hiking, kayaking, or horseback riding. You might also explore Isla Chora, a small and beautiful island populated only by lizards, turtles, and birds. A guide can lead the intrepid on a two hour kayak trip to the island for the experience of a true private beach – this one with pink sand and wild lizards – and some of the best snorkeling in the country. There are even interesting sea caves to explore.
Back on shore, returning to the base camp of the Samara Beach Hotel is a relaxing experience, with its 24-hour front desk, property-wide Wi-Fi, and mellow atmosphere. Clean rooms overlook the garden and pool, and feature cable TV, private bathrooms, and security boxes. Some of the rooms are cooled with air conditioning units, while others have fans. Most rooms have large private balconies, which go well with the hotel’s Honeymoon Special: wine, love-themed decoration, and a discount. Even if traveling solo, the romance of Samara won’t be lost on anyone staying at this tranquil beach hotel.
The Samara Beach Hotel is also a wheelchair-accessible hotel, and has accommodations suitable for individuals with physical disabilities.
